Nachdem die Akademie der Wissenschaften die Biologische Station in Lunz am See geschlossen hatte gelang es nach langen, schwierigen Verhandlungen gemeinsam mit dem Land NÖ und dem Wasserkluster ein Konzept für eine  zukunftsorientierte Nachnutzung zu erarbeiten. Das Land investiert 1,8 Millionen Euro in die Generalsanierung des Gebäudes. Diese Arbeiten werden derzeit durchgeführt. Es ist schon verständlich, wenn man der alten Station nachtrauert. Ebenso verständlich ist aber, dass möglichst ökonomisch ein neues Gebäude zur wissenschaftlichen Nutzung entstehen soll. Laut Auskunft von Baufachleuten ist der Teilabbruch wesentlich günstiger als eine kompletter Neubau. Die derzeit laufenden Abrbeiten werden entsprechend den eingereichten Plänen ausgeführt.
